Fireworks and the Fourth

This year, many towns elected not to have a fireworks show–not enough money was the chief reason. My town did have fireworks and while I adored them as a child, I rarely go out of my way to see them any longer. However, I could hear them, and they reminded me, as I suppose in truth they are supposed to, of weapons discharging. It seemed awful hearing these celebratory sounds at the same time that I knew people in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, no doubt Kashmir, Palestine, and other places too were hearing the same sounds–only there the sounds were lethal. Fireworks seemed a kind of hollow gesture. Surely there are other way to celebrate our independence.
