Curious Mating Habits of Dragonflies

I spent some time on a slow bend in the Blackwater River earlier this week and found myself surrounded by hundreds of pairs of copulating dragonflies. Having never given much thought to how they reproduce, I was surprised to find that the receiving business on the female appears to be located on the back of her neck. The male positions himself in front of her and curls his body over hers so that the producing business at the end of his tail affixes to the female’s neck. Quite remarkable. They are able to fly in tandem like this, zooming around the bay in search of a square centimeter of dry leaf or lily pad to rest on.
